Your brain on food

Good nutrition is the safest, cheapest, easiest, and most effective way to improve school (and work) performance!

Did you know that …
*  Some foods actually slow down your brain?
*  Some foods help you focus better and longer?
*  When and how often you eat can affect your memory?
Your eating patterns can affect your test scores … up to TWENTY PERCENT?
What you eat can affect your sleep patterns and energy levels?
That what you eat can impact ADHD, Autism, other kinds of neurodiversity?

Curious?
Great! Let’s do a science experiment – with you as both scientist and  lab rat!  This can actually be fun to do with your kids too. It is a special kind of “Health Diary”.

Here’s how you do it:
Grab a notebook and pen.  You will fill in the left hand pages with food information and the right hand pages with non-food information.

Left hand pages:
Keep track of everything that you eat and drink all day and evening, how much, and be sure to record the times. Be honest and remember: right now you are a (very cool) scientist doing an experiment, so all information is important and valuable!

Right hand pages:
Every hour, or as often as you can, record how you are feeling.  For example are you full of energy or want to crawl into bed? Are you focused or distracted?  Grumpy or gracious? Funky tummy?  Maybe you are craving a particular food or drink – or a flavour like sweet or salty? Did you hate or refuse a food because of its taste or texture?
You can also note down other things like sleep patterns, muscle pain or cramps, headaches, etc.  Remember to record when you are feeling calm and energized in a nice way too.  It’s all good and useful information.

Start your experiment:
Do your observations for at least 3 days, preferably for a week.
Now look for any patterns.  For example 10 am might be your grouchy hour, or you crash at 4 pm.  You might alternate between constipation and the opposite – what did you eat 24-48 hours before that? What about foods that give you too much energy or not enough?  How often do you feel really hungry (tummy rumbling) as opposed to wanting to boost your energy or mood?  Are there any foods you eat a lot of, or none at all?

Okay … so now what?
